NUET is an independent online publication that launched in 2015. It was founded by the Norwegian duo Nora Marie Vatland and Martine Aamodt Hess. Both are currently studying journalism and are running the publication from their shared flat in London.
Through curation, opinion pieces, and interviews with voices of the future, we aim to build an empowering community revolving around the importance of self-expression. NUET is a reflection of contemporary culture, covering everything from conscious living and personal style to LGBTQ+ rights and sexual health. We believe that our writing should be socially responsible, which is why our attitudes are clearly reflected and expressed. Still, we always strive to offer a factual and balanced body of work.
Now, over to the name: "Nuet" is a Norwegian word that translates to "the present moment". It reminds us to be present in life, all while being conscious about our impact on the future, to make sure those who come after us can enjoy their nuet as we do now. We want to honour the power of each present and passing moment. In five minutes you can book a one-way ticket. In four minutes you can lose interest in a conversation. In three minutes you can listen to someone's heart beat 300 times. In two minutes you can listen to a moving song. In one minute you can call someone and leave a voice mail. Right now you can change your life completely.

Sustainability has never looked this good. NUET WEAR is a selection of carefully curated vintage. By supporting pre-loved fashion we are collectively contributing to an industry free of fast fashion, child labour and unethical trading. This is true style, this is true self-expression: It is unique, ethical and sustainable.
Our first piece of merchandise is now available! The NUET canvas bag was designed in collaboration with our graphic designer Zsófi Mayer and features our slogan “Bærekraft har aldri sett så bra ut” (sustainability has never looked this good). It is, of course, produced in line with our values - printed locally and sustainably in Stavanger by D2 Merch, certified Wear Fair, Global Recycled Standard and PETA Vegan approved.

I am a 20-years-old journalism student at Kingston School of Art and split my time between London and my hometown Stavanger (Norway). Growing up, I have always taken an interest in writing and photography. NUET to me is therefore a great medium for creative expression and experimentation.
Aside from working on NUET, I do freelance and have worked as a part of the creative team behind Bolder Technologies. Throughout the years I have also been involved in local environmental activism as well as Project International Solidarity - an organization that aims to raise awareness about the Middle East conflict.
I like to focus on telling the stories of those who are pushing societal boundaries, believing that writing can be a tool for change, whether we are talking about LGBTQ+ issues or what our economic system should look like. With that being said, I value the ability to cover a range of subjects and I do not think either humour or seriousness has to be favoured over the other. It is also worth mentioning that I have a real weak spot for kitschy mugs and melancholic music, so it is no wonder why I tend to do my best work in the comfort of a dimly lit coffee shop…

Outside the digital realm, I am 20-years-old and was born and raised in Stavanger, a city on the west coast of Norway. Although having spent the past few months in Stavanger, I am predominantly based in London, where I study Journalism at Kingston School of Art. In my spare time, you will presumably find me reading one of Thomas Espedal’s novels with a large (maybe too large) mug of black coffee by my side. If I am not reading or spending time with family, I am probably writing. I did not always know that I wanted to write. As a child I wanted to become an archeologist, then a police officer and then a psychologist. But throughout these phases, I would scribble and build on my stack of journals where my adolescent thoughts claimed their place. It was in the midst of these pages that I found my love of writing.
Since 2015 my vacations have been spent working at an elderly center for patients with dementia and I volunteer annually at A21. I want to challenge the current state of the industry and delve into slow journalism with a focus on investigative reporting.
It is also noteworthy that I am inspired by the work of Lynsey Addario, Tina Barney, Elsa Dorfman and George Seldes.
Our internship opportunity in the Spring of 2020 brought three new creatives to our team: Zsófi Mayer, Tonje Beisland and Jolie Hamilton-Warford.
