In my room: Marthe Falkenhaug Lea

“IN MY ROOM” IS A COLUMN DEDICATED TO EXPLORE AND CELEBRATE INDIVIDUAL STYLE. WE’RE LOOKING INSIDE THE WARDROBE, BUT INSTEAD OF DISCOVERING NARNIA, WE’RE SEARCHING FOR PIECES THAT TELL STORIES OF IDENTITY AND dreams. This time, we meet Marthe (who you may know as a Nuet wear model) in her bedroom in Stavanger.

What does a typical day look like for you?

Depending on the day, my chores, plans and mood is different. However, I have some sort of routine. After breakfast, I walk our dog, hang out with friends or family. It is important for me to be social, but equally important to have downtime for myself. Downtime is used for my passion; music. Both listening and playing piano and singing - I somehow find it calming yet energizing. Days mostly consist of school or work, but now I prepare for a year in the military.

Describe your personal style.

I have no clue how to describe my style, but if you ask my mother, she would say “OMG contemporary vintage chic???!!!”. Is that even a thing?!

Who is your style icon?

I take inspiration from so many different people I see on the street, on social media, in movies, videos etc. Therefore, I wouldn’t say I have a single style icon. Style is a feeling which speaks to me through moments, encounters or experiences.

What is important to you when you shop?

To find clothing that are made to last. Lasting quality is important to me. I buy a few items that last, and that can be used in various ways. Also, whenever I go shopping, I have a rule; if I must think twice about a piece of clothing, it is not worth it. I must love it at first sight.

What is your current favorite piece in your closet?

I have a jumpsuit which I just bought from Weekday. Whenever I’m in a rush or just don’t feel like dressing up - this item is a lifesaver. It can also quickly be dressed up with the use of earrings and/or a silk scarf.

How did you get into collecting vintage?

I didn’t get a true interest for vintage and retro clothing until I started my first year of high school. Many of my friends loved unique clothing which they would find in vintage shops. This inspired me to use clothes from my own grandmother and later shop from the different retro, vintage shops I could find. Also, the school I attend has an image which screamed versatile including vintage, used or retro clothing.

Do you plan your outfits the day before or more intuitively?

Before I sleep I picture myself what I’ll be wearing the following day. Sometimes I actually go through with what I thought about, but usually, I change it up as my mood might have changed.

What are three pieces from your closet you can’t live without?

My three rings which I got from my grandmother. Whenever I forget the rings as I leave my house – it can only be compared to the feeling you get when you forget your headset.

One trend you hope never sees the light of day again?

The Juicy Couture tracksuit was never my thing.
